About two feet wide…

… ironically that is exactly what the trail is – about two feet wide by about 2660 miles long.

In this blog I will journal my experience in trying to attempt a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. Yes, it really is around 2660 miles long, from the Mexican border to Canada. The trail crosses 26 National Forests, 7 National Parks, 5 State Parks and 4 National Monuments. Total elevation gained is around 450,000ft, with the highest point being Forester Pass at 13,153ft  If your are interested in more information I encourage you to check out the numerous  websites for all the details.

Why do it? Since I’ve been a hiker for many years and have gone a few 4-5 day backpacking trips, I thought this would be the next step.  It’s going to be a tough physical and mental challenge to try and make it the whole way, but with the right attitude I believe I can make it. There will many ups and downs, and I’m not talking just the terrain.

In order to prepare for this I’ve had to invest in some quality lightweight gear, including my Hammock.  I owe the credit for gear choices to my friend James who helped lighten the load and enlighten me on the reason why to choose certain gear over others… Thanks buddy!!

While I’m at it, I really have to thank my friends Seth and Nicole for letting me store my belongings at their house, what a very generous thing to do. Not only that but they had an awesome surprise BBQ party for me to send me off with.  That really meant a lot to have all my friends and co-workers come and wish me safe travels.  I have had so much support from everyone it feels like you will all be along for the ride.

Also to two of the 2011 class of PCT hikers 12ounce and Day Breaker for meeting with me and discussing their journey a giving me advice.. it helped a lot. By the way, a lot of hikers are given trail names along the way.

And finally, I want to thank my family for their full support as well. Not easy telling your loved ones your going to walk over 2600 miles and not have some concern about. Thanks for understanding my choice for this adventure.

Well, I better get going, I’ve got a plane to catch and hopefully some sleep as well.

Since this blogging tech thing is all new to me, understand I will only be able to post every few days on trail or in town while drinking a cold beer.

See you at the Trailhead (Monday or Tuesday)

      • Paul, I am concerned as I haven’t seen any posts since 5/19 and today is the 25th. I know that your knee is a problem, hope it hasn’t taken you off the trail. Whatever the situation, wish you the best and have enjoyed following along with you.
